"No," Anne replied, although that wasn't strictly true. She had believed Rochefort one of her most loyal subjects, one of her most precious friends. She had welcomed him to court and into her life again with open arms. He may not have hurt her physically, but he had wounded her nonetheless.
"No," she repeated, and her voice hitched with a sudden wave of emotion. "Constance- She stopped him before-" A sob wrenched its way from her throat, cutting her off. She had trusted Rochefort, more than nearly anyone.
"All of this is my doing," she said, hands shaking as she wiped at the tears spilling over her cheeks. "We'll both be executed for treason, and the Dauphin-"
